In order to ensure a more equitable healthcare system, it is vital that all medical equipment be made accessible. Disabled folx have had to endure the inaccessibility of medical equipment for too long. This has caused inequities in the quality of care people with disabilities receive. Medical equipment, such as scales, the height of exam tables, and imaging equipment are all often not accessible to people with disabilities.
The U.S. Department of Justice recently asked for comments regarding the accessibility of Medical diagnostic equipment. In our response to the Dept. of Justice, we called for not only an urgent, phased plan to ensure all medical equipment to be made accessible, but also for research and development in medical technology to be better supported. This will allow there to be a broader range of accessible equipment available in the market. The National Center for Disability, Equity, and Intersectionality advocates for all medical equipment, whether used for diagnostic purposes or not, to be accessibile for people with disabilities.
