Transgender Awareness Week
November 13 – 19th
What is Transgender Awareness Week?
Each year from November 13th- 19th, individuals and organizations across the country observe Transgender Awareness Week to raise awareness and understanding of transgender people and the challenges they face.
Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR)
Participate in TDOR by attending or organizing a vigil on November 20th to honor those lost to anti-transgender violence. Vigils, often hosted by local LGBTQ groups, include a reading of the names of the deceased.
History of TDOR
TDOR was founded in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith to honor Rita Hester, a transgender woman killed in 1998. The vigil, marking the one year anniversary of her death, became the foundation for the annual global observance of TDOR.
Challenges Faced by the Transgender Community:
From 2018- 2022 there was a 72% increase in suicide attempts among trans youth, due to anti-trans laws. Transgender people face significant challenges, including health disparities, discrimination, violence, and lack of legal protections. The community often faces barriers to healthcare, employment, and safety, especially within marginalized communities.
Allyship
To be a trans ally, educate yourself about transgender experiences, language, and issues with resources like books, articles, and documentaries. Listen to trans voices and amplify their stories. Stay informed about the challenges they face and use inclusive language, such as respecting pronouns.
